Features_of_a_wiki.jpg

You can do a lot more than just add text to a wiki. What follows are descriptions and examples of things you can add to your wiki pages. (This is not a "how to" page but simply a page of possibilities.)

This is not an all inclusive list. Wikispaces is adding features all the time.

Text

There will be one standard text style that you set for your whole wiki, but you can also change text within a page.
  • Size:
    • Normal
    • Heading 6
    • Heading 5
    • Heading 4

    • Heading 3

    • Heading 2

    • Heading 1

  • Color
    • You can choose all kinds of different colors from the color chart. These are just a few.

  • Style
    • Bold
    • Italics
    • Underline
  • Font
    • You can choose from several different fonts.

    • You can write in super-script, sub-script, strikethrough and/or change the background of your text.

Files, Images and Videos

Files, images, audio, and video can be imported into the wiki and then added for people to access. All different file formats can be posted. Here are just a few:
Notes: Image size can be adjusted once it is added. For best results you may want to adjust the size in an image editing program. Captions can be added to images like shown above but will only be added to the bottom of the image. Also, images can be made into hyperlinks. Click on the road sign image, and it will take you to a map of Ireland.

Slides

A slide show can be put into the wiki by using your favorite online slide sharing program. (I found these slides online, and they have great information about Wikispace Widgets.)

Polls and Surveys

Polls and surveys can be added to the wiki. Use your favorite online poll or survey maker (mine is the form function in Google docs) and then use the Poll Widget to put it on the page.

RSS Feeds

An RSS feed is Really Simple Syndication.

  • Here is an RSS feed from ESPN:
[[rss url="http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/rss/news" link="true" number="5" date="true" author="true"]]

  • Here is a blog I created through Blogger. I entered my Blogger feed URL address in the RSS Feed Widget, and now you can see my blog.
[[rss url="http://triciabranahl.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss" link="true" description="true" number="2" date="true" author="true" enclosure="true"]]

A couple notes about RSS Feeds in Wikispaces:
  1. Wikispaces does not update your feed instantaneously. (2-3 hours)
  2. An RSS feed URL is slightly different than just the home page of a site. You will need to look around the site to find the right address, for example my blog home page is: http://triciabranahl.blogspot.com/ and my RSS feed URL is http://triciabranahl.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss. Each site will be a little different.

More Information on Features

Instructions for how to set up and use all of these features and more are listed on the Help button found on each page. The instructions are very easy to read and follow. Wikispaces users should take time and explore all of Wikispaces, including the Widgets menu. Not all features were added to this page (because I do not want all of my personal information on the Internet), but features like Chat and IM or Booksmarks would certainly be easy to incorporate into a wiki.
